Travel To Gangwon-do: A Healing Trip To The Mountains And The Seas

In the heart of every city dweller, there lies a longing for distant horizons, where there are rolling mountain ranges, vast oceans, expansive grasslands, and the beauty of changing seasons.

Embarking on an impromptu journey to embrace nature may sound like a distant dream, but in reality, “far away” is not so far at all. It awaits in Gangwon Province, nestled in the north-eastern part of South Korea.

Following the previous journey to Gyeongsangbuk-do, once again, Weekender had the privilege of being invited by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) Singapore to visit this destination blessed with both scenic beauty and tranquillity. Just like the previous trip, this itinerary is suitable for all ages and very family-friendly, making it an ideal choice for those travelling with children. This article will take you on a journey into Gangwon-do, where you can immerse yourself in this healing adventure.

1. Chuncheon

While Chuncheon-si is only about a two-hour drive from Seoul, it offers a completely different ambience compared to the bustling capital. Instead of skyscrapers and heavy traffic, we were greeted by the view of rolling green hills and tranquil lakes. When you are in Chuncheon, don’t miss the chance to experience South Korea’s currently longest cable car ride—the Samaksan Mountain Lake Cable Car. After being rewarded by the gorgeous scenery throughout the cable car ride, you’ll find a charming café when you reach the top. Visitors can leisurely sip coffee on the observation deck while taking in the picturesque scenery of the winding streams of the Bukhan River and a bird’s eye view of the cityscape.

If you are travelling with children or feel young at heart, a visit to Legoland Korea Resort might be just right for you. The theme park, which officially opened in 2022, includes themed zones like Lego City, Lego Ninjago World, and Lego Castle/ Kingdoms. The thrilling rides and intricate Lego models in each zone are creatively designed, and to top it off, the rooms at the Legoland Resort echo the themes of the park too!

Food

Upon your first visit to Chuncheon, you might find the local cuisine to be simple and unpretentious but is healthy and nutritionally balanced nonetheless. We enjoyed every bite of the sizzling Dakgalbi (spicy grilled chicken and vegetables) and buckwheat noodles that were packed with the flavours of the countryside. If you have been indulging in a diet consisting of overly refined and processed foods, this rustic meal can be a refreshing change. For those seeking the freshest buckwheat noodles, you can head to the Chuncheon Makguksu Museum and try your hands at making your very own bowl of noodles from scratch. Potato lovers can also drop by Café Gamzabatt, nestled in a field of blooming flowers, and try their unique potato bread and potato latte.

Special Recommendation

There is one activity that even those who are not typically fans of water sports will absolutely love—the Mulle-gil canoe experience. Paddling on the tranquil waters against the backdrop of lush green hills, we felt like we had drifted into Monet’s “Water Lilies” painting. Fret not if you’re a non-swimmer, as there are safety measures in place and professional instructors and guides to ensure your safety. This is an activity where everyone can join in the fun, and there are drones to take your pics as well!
