Our four-day escape to JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa in Thailand was unforgettable for one delicious reason: chocolate.

A huge thank you to JW Marriott for inviting us to celebrate the opening of Duc de Praslin Chocolaterie Boutique & Atelier during the resort’s annual Summer Garden Party. What we expected to be the launch of a beautiful chocolate boutique turned into a surprisingly immersive journey into the world of Thai cacao—complete with hands-on workshops, tree planting, chocolate-inspired dining, and even a chocolate spa ritual.

If you’ve been looking for a unique luxury experience in Thailand that goes beyond the usual beach holiday, this might just be it.

Chocolate Has Found a New Home in Khao Lak

When you think of Khao Lak, you probably picture pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and island-hopping adventures. Chocolate? Probably not.

That’s exactly what makes Duc de Praslin Chocolaterie Boutique & Atelier so special. It’s one of the few resort-based bean-to-bar chocolate factories in Thailand, transforming locally grown cacao from Phang Nga into artisanal chocolate bars, pralines, and desserts.

What surprised us most was discovering that cacao is actually grown right here in southern Thailand. Around 85% of the cacao used by the chocolaterie currently comes from Phang Nga, sourced directly from local farming cooperatives. Instead of importing chocolate from overseas, the brand is creating something genuinely rooted in its destination.

Our Chocolate Adventure Started the Moment We Arrived

Our chocolate adventure began with personalised Cacao Passports, which guided us through interactive tasting stations around the lush JW Garden. Each stop introduced us to a different flavour, ingredient, or cacao-inspired cocktail, making the evening feel more like an edible treasure hunt than a traditional hotel event.

As the sun began to set, we sipped on cacao-infused cocktails before joining the official opening celebration of the new chocolaterie.

But the chocolate fun didn’t stop there. We got to peek inside the mini chocolate factory, join a hands-on Chocolate Masterclass, and take part in a chocolate-making workshop, where we could even decorate our very own chocolate bars with personalised designs.

Then came one of our favourite moments of the trip: planting our very own cacao tree at JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa’s JW Garden.

And this is definitely not your typical hotel garden. The JW Garden is a full working farm, where guests can cycle around, pick fresh vegetables, feed animals, and even dine at its own garden restaurant. It was such a lovely way to slow down and connect with where the ingredients we eat actually come from.

There’s something unexpectedly meaningful about planting a little cacao tree and leaving a tiny piece of yourself behind in a destination you’ve already fallen in love with.

A Chocolate Dinner We’re Still Dreaming About

The celebrations continued with an extraordinary chocolate-inspired dinner beneath the stars.

Thankfully, it wasn’t an overwhelming “everything tastes like chocolate” menu. Instead, cacao appeared in thoughtful, unexpected ways across savoury dishes, sauces, cocktails, and desserts.

The atmosphere was equally memorable: long communal tables, glowing butter candles, menus printed on plantable seed paper, and warm tropical air drifting through the garden.

It felt elegant without being overly formal—the kind of dinner where conversations linger long after dessert has been served.

Yes, There’s Even a Chocolate Spa

Just when we thought we’d experienced chocolate in every possible form, the resort surprised us again.

The chocolate spa treatment turned out to be one of the most relaxing moments of our stay. You can choose between a traditional Thai massage or a nourishing body scrub, with rich cacao aromas filling the treatment room and chocolate-infused products leaving our skin feeling incredibly soft and pampered.

It’s indulgent, comforting, and honestly the perfect excuse to spend an afternoon escaping the tropical heat.

More Than Just Chocolate

Khao Lak has no shortage of beautiful resorts, but JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa offers something refreshingly different.

One of the first things that caught our attention was the resort’s impressive swimming pool system, which winds through the property like a natural river. Every ground-floor room has direct access to the pool, so you can literally step out of your room and straight into the water. The pool meanders in different directions throughout the resort, with its various sections connecting and flowing into the main swimming pool. The result is a fun and unique layout that feels almost like having your own private waterway right outside your door.

The resort also has its own private stretch of beach, exclusively accessible to hotel guests, making it easy to enjoy Khao Lak’s beautiful coastline away from the crowds. And when it comes to dining, there’s plenty of choice, with multiple restaurants and bars serving everything from authentic Thai cuisine and Western favourites to Japanese dishes and laid-back drinks by the beach.

What we especially loved, however, is the resort’s commitment to marine conservation. JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa is involved in a special bamboo shark conservation programme, where guests can learn more about these fascinating creatures and see their development up close—from bamboo shark eggs to young sharks at different stages of growth. The programme aims to nurture the sharks before releasing them back into the ocean, thereby supporting and protecting the local marine ecosystem.

A Stay That Goes Beyond the Ordinary

After four days here, we realised that JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort & Spa isn’t simply a place to stay—it’s a destination where food, nature, wellness, conservation, and meaningful experiences come together.

And while chocolate may have been the delicious highlight that brought us here, it was everything else we discovered along the way that made this tropical escape truly unforgettable.
