Woody, Buzz, and the gang are back
If you didn’t get at least a little teary watching Andy give away his toys to Bonnie at the end of Toy Story 3, don’t talk to us. We’re kidding. But seriously, that emotional ending was probably the perfect way to wrap up the franchise, and many of us did assume that was it.
So the news that Disney/Pixar was going to make a fourth film was received with mixed feelings. We were anxious about whether we really needed a Toy Story 4. Until we saw the first trailer.
Released just last night, this teaser trailer blows all our worries of a slipshod sequel right out of the water. There’s nothing like seeing our favourite talking toys gang again – Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, Rex, Ham Slinky, Forky…
Hang on. Who’s Forky?
The first Toy Story 4 trailer introduces a new character who is just not a toy – or so he insists. Forky’s actually a spork (a fork and spoon combined) that looks like an arts and crafts project, with googly eyes and pipe cleaners for arms. According to Disney/Pixar’s official synopsis, Forky is kind of a reluctant toy that arrives in Bonnie’s room, where Woody and Co. all are.
Seems like there’s been a huge shift in direction from the romantic comedy plot we had thought was coming. A few years ago, along with the announcement of a fourth installment, the studio said they would focus on the relationship between Woody and his old flame, Bo Beep. This new adventure with a not-toy sounds much more like the Toy Story we know and love.
If only the teaser trailer were a little longer, but we’ll be hanging out with the toys for Christmas around the city, until other trailers are released. And until the movie itself, of course, is released in June 2019.
