Travel To Gangwon-do: A Healing Trip To The Mountains And The Seas

In the heart of every city dweller, there lies a longing for distant horizons, where there are rolling mountain ranges, vast oceans, expansive grasslands, and the beauty of changing seasons.

Embarking on an impromptu journey to embrace nature may sound like a distant dream, but in reality, "far away" is not so far at all. It awaits in Gangwon Province, nestled in the north-eastern part of South Korea.

Following the previous journey to Gyeongsangbuk-do, once again, Weekender had the privilege of being invited by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) Singapore to visit this destination blessed with both scenic beauty and tranquillity. Just like the previous trip, this itinerary is suitable for all ages and very family-friendly, making it an ideal choice for those travelling with children. This article will take you on a journey into Gangwon-do, where you can immerse yourself in this healing adventure.

5. Yangyang/ Sokcho

Yangyang is another fantastic destination for those who haven’t had enough of the sea, and when it comes to sea-related activities, our top recommended destination is Yangyang Surfyy Beach. Needless to say, Surfyy Beach exudes sunny and sporty vibes. Surfers will be able to access the facilities they need, and non-surfing travellers can simply chill at the bars and restaurants on the beach. There are even beach parties after sunset!

While travelling to Gangwon-do can make one feel at one with nature, there is so much more to living in harmony with nature. Get inspired by attending the Gangwon Forestry Exhibition 2023, located at Goseong, near Yangyang and Sokcho. The theme of this exhibition includes greenery, peace, travel, and healing. If you’re interested in incorporating nature into your lifestyle, this expo will likely be an eye-opener. The exhibition runs from September 22nd to October 22, so don’t miss it if you’re visiting Korea during this period of time.

Food

One of the most iconic dishes of Sokcho is stuffed squid (aka squid soondae). The concept is a bit similar to that of the Korean blood sausage, except that the casing is made from squid, and the filling typically consists of seafood, vegetables, minced meat, and glutinous rice. For those who enjoy fried chicken, the sweet and sour fried chicken at the Sokcho Central Market is a must-try. It’s said that many people travel from afar just to get a taste of this popular snack, which explains why there is always a long queue at the fried chicken stall.

Special Recommendation

While the above highlights some of the local speciality foods, the culinary delights at the Sokcho Night Market go far beyond these. If you are making a trip there, why not try something from every stall? Who knows, there might be even more surprises waiting for you!
