Travel To Gangwon-do: A Healing Trip To The Mountains And The Seas

In the heart of every city dweller, there lies a longing for distant horizons, where there are rolling mountain ranges, vast oceans, expansive grasslands, and the beauty of changing seasons.

Embarking on an impromptu journey to embrace nature may sound like a distant dream, but in reality, "far away" is not so far at all. It awaits in Gangwon Province, nestled in the north-eastern part of South Korea.

Following the previous journey to Gyeongsangbuk-do, once again, Weekender had the privilege of being invited by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) Singapore to visit this destination blessed with both scenic beauty and tranquillity. Just like the previous trip, this itinerary is suitable for all ages and very family-friendly, making it an ideal choice for those travelling with children. This article will take you on a journey into Gangwon-do, where you can immerse yourself in this healing adventure.

4. Jeongseon

Equally blessed with natural scenic beauty, Jeongseon can be considered an excellent destination for a day trip. It is also one of the birthplaces of the famous folksong “Arirang”. When you visit Jeongseon, don’t miss the vibrant 5-day market (held on days ending with the numbers 2 and 7 of each month). Amidst the hustle and bustle, you can discover locally produced goods, snacks, delicacies from the mountains and seas, and even clothing and bags, all at affordable prices.

And of course, a “must-do” in the birthplace of “Arirang,” is to watch an authentic Arirang performance at Arirang Culture Center, located near the market. Even with a limited understanding of the Korean language, we found this emotional ethnic folk song very touching and evoking a sense of nostalgia. It came as a surprise that Jeongseon’s Arirang performance has a unique twist in terms of story adaptation and presentation. Even if you know the original story more or less, the performance at Jeongseon may be a little different from your expectations. Curious about how so? Watch to find out!

Food

Amongst all the delicious regional cuisine, one thing you won’t easily find elsewhere is steamed rice with the nutritious and aromatic Korean thistle. This dish is commonly accompanied by local side dishes like assorted kimchi, fermented soybean paste stew, buckwheat pancakes and acorn jelly. For those who are more diet-conscious, this flavourful combination is a guilt-free delight.

Special Recommendation

One place that you certainly will not regret visiting is Café Najeon Station, Korea’s 1st and Only Railway Café, and perhaps one of the most Instagrammable places in Jeongseon. As its name suggests, this cafe is transformed into an old train station, and you can find walkable train tracks right outside. We even had the pleasure of meeting an incredibly friendly and photogenic doggo there when we visited.
