Travel To Gangwon-do: A Healing Trip To The Mountains And The Seas

In the heart of every city dweller, there lies a longing for distant horizons, where there are rolling mountain ranges, vast oceans, expansive grasslands, and the beauty of changing seasons.

Embarking on an impromptu journey to embrace nature may sound like a distant dream, but in reality, "far away" is not so far at all. It awaits in Gangwon Province, nestled in the north-eastern part of South Korea.

Following the previous journey to Gyeongsangbuk-do, once again, Weekender had the privilege of being invited by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) Singapore to visit this destination blessed with both scenic beauty and tranquillity. Just like the previous trip, this itinerary is suitable for all ages and very family-friendly, making it an ideal choice for those travelling with children. This article will take you on a journey into Gangwon-do, where you can immerse yourself in this healing adventure.

3. Pyeongchang

After soaking in the sea breeze, we ventured into the mountainous Pyeongchang County. Ski enthusiasts may find Pyeongchang familiar because not only is it a skiing paradise in South Korea, but it also hosted the 2009 Winter World Championships and the 2018 Winter Olympics. It was nearing mid-autumn when we visited, which was a bit too early to ski. However, in the coming months, travellers will be greeted by sights of enchanting autumn foliage followed by pristine white snow as they take the cable car ride up to the Balwangsan Skywalk. The widely popular drama “Winter Sonata” was also filmed at the Yongpyong Ski Resort in Pyeongchang.

A visit to the Samyang Ranch and the Woljeongsa Temple during the crisp autumn season completed the serene experience. As one gazes upon the vast grasslands and breathes in the refreshing scents of grass and pine, it is easy to forget the hustle and bustle of the world. The cherry on top was appreciating tea and admiring the early autumn leaves at the picturesque Unamjeong Pavilion. Such an experience was incredibly soothing for the body and soul.

Food

We had quite a handful of delightful culinary experiences in Pyeongchang, but one that we found particularly unusual was Pyeongchang’s wild vegetable dishes. What sets Pyeongchang’s wild vegetable bibimbap apart from ordinary bibimbap is the sheer variety of wild vegetables used, which can be utterly bewildering. Some of the locally sourced greens are so unique to the area that you might not even know their names, but you will definitely remember their distinctive tastes. Such an array of mountain vegetables can serve as the perfect palate cleanser, while meeting the needs of those looking for vegetarian or vegan options.

Special Recommendation

In the case that outdoor activities are not feasible due to bad weather, we recommend visiting the newly opened MUSEUM DEEPDIVE near Yongpyong Resort, where you can immerse yourself in the dazzling art displays in each gallery. It feels like one can get as close as possible to the mesmerizing beauty of nature via the artworks despite staying indoors. If you are an art enthusiast, make sure not to miss out on this extraordinary experience!
