Celebrate a Dazzling Diversity of Cultures

As a vibrant and bustling city with a history stretching back centuries, Taipei is rich in traditions and constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity across the region. Its contributions to music and cuisine set the bar and its influences can be felt across the globe. Closer to the city, the capital’s “Taipei Eco Museum” redefines what a museum should be and takes it from the confines of 4 walls.

There are eight large museums without borders within the city (Beitou Hot Springs Area, North Town, South Town–National Taiwan University, Xinyi–Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, Dadaocheng, Wanhua–Bangka, Shilin–Taipei Performing Arts Center, Nangang–Taipei Music Center). Each brings forth the finest in its respective field and blends them in a cohesive unity that can only be described as a fluid dance of history, culture and arts.

One of Taipei’s most celebrated districts, “Dadaocheng” is steeped in history. The gradual gentrification of the neighborhood has seen a youthful resurgence with a plethora of hipster cafes, cultural-creative shops, retro eateries and snack bars. Once known as the “large open space for drying rice in the sun” the area continues to feed the curious with local delights as well as festive experiences. This is the main venue during the annual Taipei Lunar New Festival which is a Chinese New Year shopping extravaganza where the famous Dihua Street receives crowds thronging to browse regional specialty-goods shops on both sides.

To savor more cultural treats after filling your belly with culinary ones, head down to Songshan Cultural and Creative Park where you can find the latest exciting exhibitions being held. Even here, you would not be far from top-notch shopping. Within the park, which used to house a tobacco factory is “Taipei’s Creative Hub” which includes a section where independently designed clothes, furniture and other items are for sale.
