On ‘Movember’ 1, millions of men around the world will stand together and forge a hairy alliance to assure a healthier life for all men

Generation Mo plans to change the actions and attitudes of men when it comes to their health, and their moustache.

Charity for Men’s Ailments

Movember is an annual, month-long charity initiative, held across the 30 days of November. The initiative encourages men to grow a Mo’ (slang for Moustache) and effectively become walking, talking billboards for commonly unspoken men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer and depression.

For the second year running, in Asia, Movember will kick off in Singapore on Nov 1. Online registrations have opened at sg.movember.com.

Mo Bros Making a Difference

Men who support Movember are known as Mo Bros and collectively make up Generation Mo. Mo Bros begin their pledge on Movember 1 with a clean-shaven face and, for the remainder of the month, they grow their Mos.

Supported by the women in their lives (Mo Sistas), Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts and documenting their progress on their individual Mo-space pages at sg.movember.com.

“Almost 600 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Singapore each year, and over 115 cases are fatal. Alongside the Singapore Cancer Society, Movember aims to increase the awareness of prostate cancer and help men to detect it early, ultimately saving lives,” says Greg Rafferty, Country Manager, Movember Asia Pacific.

“In 2012, 2,088 Singaporeans raised $743,000 for men’s health, making Singapore No. 1 globally in terms of funds raised per person. In 2013, we’re setting our ambitions high and aim to beat last year’s number,” he adds.

Changing attitudes to men’s health & educating about the risks

Supported locally by the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS), Movember aims to work to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face and to act on that knowledge, thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.

The funds raised in Singapore support the SCS and are distributed directly to the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.
