With Tiong Bahru rapidly rising to be the next top hipster enclave, will we end up overriding the nostalgic neighborhood we once knew to become one so modernized?
Are pies and cakes really slowly snuffing out laksa and chwee kuehs?
We asked and you answered! Here are our favorite answers:
Top Answer: To be honest – what is better than having a pies and cakes! Enjoying the rustic atmosphere of tiong bahru. After having a hearty lunch at tiong bahru market! It’s the perfect winning combination. It’s all about bringing in the younger people into a place filled with history. Who knows you might meet someone at a cafe around the area who can educate us. It’s a win-win situation!
Creative dishes are necessary. They present the progress of our livings. I believe laksa cupcakes not bad. Would like to consume them.
The traditional pies and cakes is always the best, but I don’t mind tasting all sorts of other flavors like sambal chili cupcakes, fish pie, cream cracker cupcakes, minced pork pie will be good also.
Food still has to keep to its original flavor. Creative cuisine can be in the era but its original flavor still has to keep its recognized taste. With cupcake as the in food for everyone, I will not be surprised to taste laksa flavour or maybe chilla crab flavour, a fusion taste of spicy and sweet.
Well, time has changed and so have our taste buds! Changes need to be made to cater to mass market and even the traditional goodies like mooncakes are labelled “low sugar” to fit the needs of modern people and their eating habits. I see the need for variety from good O’fashion chwee kwehs to innovative hybrid confections. Even my granny enjoys eating pork floss bun which didn’t exist back in her younger days. It’s a mistake to “replace” any sort of delectable dishes but instead “expand” the variety to fit the cosmopolitan city like Singapore.
I believe that pies & cakes (western food) can coexist with laksa & chwee kuehs (asian food)! As long as the food tastes great, smells great & looks great with reasonable prices, people will eat them.
“Food plays an extraordinary role in shaping history as people learn history through food appreciation. So treating food with respect is necessary because they represent an extension of culture, heritage and pride. Fusion cuisines are created to make traditional cuisines less repulsive by foreigners/ youngsters and of course to profit. I would love to savour traditional dishes in a modernized environment. Isn’t this a perfect nostalgia meets new setting? “
