In case you haven’t caught up to speed (pun unintended) with the news, there’s a brand-new Sonic the Hedgehog live-action movie coming to cinemas this November! Based on the internationally renowned videogame franchise from Sega; the bright blue, smart-talking, fleet-footed hedgehog of our childhood is coming to life in an adventure-comedy film.
The trailer has got us pretty hyped, with swoon-worthy James Marsden taking on a comical role as Sonic’s (voiced by the hilarious improv comedian Ben Schwartz) hapless human best friend Tom Wachowski, who teams up with Sonic when Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey), the villain with an advertisement-worthy moustache, decides to, as all villains do, go through on his plan of world domination.
We’re loving Jim Carrey in the trailer – if anything, watch it for his outrageously exaggerated performance as the diabolical egg-headed Dr Robotnik! The star famous for his roles in Ace Ventura and The Mask has outdone himself once again, bringing across a comedic garishness that makes Dr Robotnik seem larger-than-life.
However, things may change quite a bit from this trailer to what you will see on screen this November – and it’s all because of the largely negative reviews from the audience.
If you’ve realised, the CGI version of Sonic in the trailer, with his longer limbs and human-like face (check out those teeth!) looks… pretty different from the original Sonic. And this seems to have been unsettling many, after years of the hedgehog being depicted in an animated manner.
In fact, just days after the trailer was released, the film’s director, Jeff Fowler, said that the film studio will be changing Sonic’s look would be changed ahead of the movie’s release.
Well, November is a little more than half a year away, so the studio does have some time to make changes, and we’re looking forward to how the “new” Sonic will be like! Otherwise, we think the movie’s shaping up to be a pretty good action film with lots of laughs and great acting, plus a pretty bomb soundtrack!
