Power 98 Music Review: The coolest dude in Jazz is back

You don’t have to be a Jazz lover to appreciate and enjoy this album

By Sonja Steinmetz

Time to eat my words.

Jamie Cullum’s biggest fan, I am not. Friends raved that he was amazing when he performed in Singapore but I wasn’t convinced. Besides, he looks like a hobbit.

What an ignorant fool I was because after listening to his latest album, Momentum, I was dished a steaming hot serving of my own words that I sheepishly ate.

His opening track, “The Same Things”, is a good example of the exuberance and energy that one can expect from him on stage.

He shows his cheeky side on the big band-inspired, horn-heavy throwback to the 1960s, “When I Get Famous”, and he’ll seduce you on “Pure Imagination”, where his piano-playing and voice truly shine.

Vintage Yet Progressive

Jamie is one of the most talented and exciting musicians of our time. Ok, maybe that’s a little excessive but talented he definitely is and he’s got a distinctly unique voice and point of view that set him apart.

On “Momentum”, his sixth studio album, he shows us that there’s more to him than jazz. He infuses pop, funk and even some hip-hop (thanks to British rapper Roots Manuva) in this collection of 12 songs that will have you jigging along or reflecting pensively.
How many artists can do that all in one album?

Start your day with Sonja Steinmetz on The Power Breakfast Show, together with Hubert Tang and Jamie Yeo, on weekday mornings, 6am-10am, on Power 98.
