Touted as Mainland China’s first sci-fi blockbuster ever, The Wandering Earth was probably the most eagerly awaited movie among Chinese movie-goers, and indeed zoomed straight up in China’s box office, grossing 1.4 billion yuan (about S$283 million) in just the first five days it hit cinemas. The movie, based on Hugo Award-winning Chinese author Liu Cixin’s short story of the same name, is set in the future on the verge of an apocalypse.
