We take closer at this unique way of exploring the country of rolling green hills and kilt-wearing bag-pipers

There are countless ways to explore gorgeous Scotland – touring the grand castles, train rides through majestic landscapes, driving along the coastal lines and the list goes on. One of the best ways is to go on an island-hopping adventure!

Whether you’ve only got a couple of days or a couple of weeks, it’s worth taking the time to explore a few islands and take in the unique character of each. The main island groups are Inner and Outer Hebrides in the west, and Orkney and Shetland in the north.

Skara Brae

Orkney and Shetland

Travel up to the north of Scotland to explore the remnants of ancient civilisations at sites such as Skara Brae, Brough of Birsay, Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe on Orkney. Witness the incredible sight of thousands of seabirds on cliffs at nature reserves on Mainland Orkney or in Shetland. One interesting thin to do on Unst in Shetland is to unearth the history of the Viking era by exploring excavated Viking longhouses. There are many coastal cliff top walks to explore as well!
