They say the best way to immerse yourself in a new place is to live like a local.

2. Tokyo: Tsukiji Fish Market

Every traveller visiting Tokyo must have his or her share of the Tsukiji experience. One of the largest and busiest markets in the world, this frenzied hotspot draws locals and tourists alike with its charming chaos and fresh catches.

Tsukiji is a three-block sprawl devoted to the hawking and auctioning of seafood — an amazing 2 million kilograms of fish a day — with vendors communicating in their own lingo and buyers decked out in wetsuits and boots.

You can observe the thick of action if you rise early, as the off-limits tuna auction is open to the public only from 5am to 6.15am. The number of visitors is limited to 120 per day, so make a dash to apply at the Osakana Fukyu Centre at the Kachidoki Gate before its opening at 5am.

If you’re unable to secure your spot, the Tsukiji Outer Market is another treat, offering fresh sushi breakfast, warm soup, grilled seafood and confectionery.

Currently easily accessible in central Tokyo, Tsukiji Market is a must-visit —especially before it relocates to the man-made Toyosu Island in November this year.
