No horror fan’s watchlist is complete without The Conjuring series!
1. The Roses
The Roses is a 2025 satirical black comedy film, a modern reimagining of the 1989 classic The War of the Roses and the 1981 novel it was based on. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Theo and Olivia Colman as Ivy, a seemingly perfect married couple with successful careers and children.
The film’s plot begins when a devastating storm destroys a naval history museum that Theo, a hotshot architect, designed. At the same time, a high-profile food critic takes shelter in Ivy’s seaside restaurant, “We’ve Got Crabs!” which Theo had gifted her. This leads to a glowing review and Ivy’s career as a chef taking off, making her the new breadwinner. Theo’s career, however, is effectively over, and he becomes a resentful stay-at-home father.
As their roles reverse, deep-seated resentment and competition ignite between Theo and Ivy. Their relationship deteriorates from passive-aggressive jabs to a full-blown war, with both spouses engaging in increasingly cruel and destructive behavior in a fight over their lavish house and other assets. The film escalates into a dark, no-holds-barred battle as they try to make each other’s lives miserable, blurring the line between love and hatred.
