Imagine reading paragraphs of text with no punctuation peppered between sentences. For someone today this would have been difficult and frustrating, but before 1908, this was how the Chinese in Singapore read their daily news.
This is just one of the interesting characteristics you can observe in Singapore’s early Chinese newspapers at this new special exhibition. Highlights include a rare imperial gazette published during the Qing dynasty and a copy of Lat Pau《叻报》, Singapore’s first Chinese daily.
