Theatre Review: Classic Revisited, The Phantom Of The Opera Is Here Again!

The world’s most beloved musical, The Phantom of the Opera, will once again enchant audiences at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, for a limited season from 9 May to 22 June 2025.

Previously, it was presented at Marina Bay Sands in 2013 and 2019. Needless to say, many of us already know the story and its iconic score by heart. We, too, have seen several versions over the years. Yet, The Phantom of the Opera never loses its charm as a timeless masterpiece, casting its spell anew each time. It is a production I never tire of revisiting—whether to relive fond memories or to discover something fresh in each performance.

Superb Casting with Depth and Expressiveness

For long-time fans like myself, much of the thrill in watching each new production of The Phantom of the Opera lies in portraying its iconic duo. If you have seen the musical before—whether on stage or screen—you likely have certain expectations of the Phantom: a dark, enigmatic musical genius with a disfigured face and a hauntingly beautiful voice who becomes obsessively infatuated with Christine, the young, gifted soprano he mentors and adores.

Ben Foster’s interpretation of the Phantom met these expectations and intensified the character’s emotions, revealing the Phantom’s tortured soul and fragile humanity beneath his brooding exterior. Opposite him, Grace Roberts as Christine was equally captivating. With her powerful voice and emotional range, she lit up the stage, holding our gaze with every note and gesture.

Apart from the central duo, the supporting cast brought depth and vibrancy to the production, each adding their distinct flair to the unfolding drama. Matt Leisy’s Raoul, Christine’s childhood sweetheart, was surprisingly mature, but somehow an assuring balance to the Phantom’s unrestrained madness. A special mention goes to Carlotta (Raquel Suarez Groen), whose spirited and pitch-perfect performance captured every bit of the character’s theatrical arrogance with delightful precision.

Though not always in the spotlight, the supporting cast delivered powerful harmonies that sent shivers down the spine. Such moments are part of what makes this musical truly world-class.

Exquisite Set, Costumes, and Choreography

Revisiting The Phantom of the Opera was a powerful reminder of why it remains one of the most spectacular and iconic productions in theatrical history. Despite the physical constraints of the stage, the set design masterfully conjures a world of its own, igniting the imagination and captivating the senses with its richness and depth.

The costumes and props were as elegant and elaborate as we remembered, with the added surprise of some bold, imaginative touches. Though dance plays a supporting role to the music in this production, the ballet sequences artfully complement the storytelling, and the dancers did a fantastic job in creating an immersive theatrical experience.
