Apple has finally done it — the iPhone is folding.
At its last night (9 September 2026) launch, Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone and arguably the biggest design change to the iPhone in years. Rather than simply giving us another slightly faster, slightly better iPhone, Apple has taken the familiar smartphone and given it a whole new way to fit into everyday life.
Think of it as an iPhone that can transform into a mini tablet when you need a little more room.
Small Enough to Carry, Big Enough to Do More
When closed, the iPhone Duo has a compact 5.4-inch outer display, making it easy to use like a regular phone. Open it up, and you get a generous 7.6-inch display — the largest screen ever on an iPhone.
And this is where the foldable design starts to make sense beyond simply looking cool.
Watching a show on the go? You get a much bigger screen without carrying an iPad. Planning a holiday? You can have your map and travel information side by side. Replying to messages while checking an email or browsing the web? The larger display gives you more space to multitask.
In other words, it is designed to move between phone mode and mini-tablet mode, depending on what you are doing.
A New iPhone for the Way We Live Now
The iPhone Duo feels particularly suited to people who are constantly switching between work, travel and entertainment.
Imagine opening it up on a flight to watch a movie, checking your itinerary while travelling, or using the larger screen to edit photos after a day out. For content creators, the folding design also opens up new possibilities for taking photos and videos from different angles.
Apple has also redesigned iOS 27 to make better use of the larger screen, while the Duo supports Apple Pencil for those who want to jot down notes or sketch directly on the phone.
It Is Still Unmistakably Apple
Despite the new folding format, Apple hasn’t gone completely experimental with the look.
The iPhone Duo comes in Star White and Night Sky, with a polished Grade 5 titanium frame. Apple says it is built with a precision hinge and designed for durability, while the inner display features a nano-texture finish to help reduce glare.
Under the hood, it runs on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, with a dual-battery design and improved thermal management to support performance and all-day battery life.
So while the folding screen is the headline, Apple is clearly positioning the Duo as a premium iPhone first — just one that happens to fold.
The Luxury iPhone Comes with a Luxury Price Tag
There is, of course, one big catch: the price.
In Singapore, the iPhone Duo starts at S$3099 for 256GB, putting it firmly in Apple’s premium territory. Pre-orders begin on October 16, with the phone available from October 23.
That makes the Duo less of an impulse upgrade and more of a statement device for those who want the newest form factor — and are willing to pay for it.
More Than Just a New iPhone Duo
The foldable iPhone may have grabbed the headlines, but Apple also introduced some interesting upgrades across its wider ecosystem.
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max bring upgraded cameras, better battery life and the new A20 Pro chip, making them the more familiar choice for anyone who isn’t ready to go foldable just yet.
For the health and fitness crowd, the Apple Watch Series 12 gets a new Health Sensing System, including more frequent heart rate and heart rate variability measurements, and a new Readiness feature designed to give users a better sense of how ready their bodies are for the day ahead.
Then there are the AirPods 5, which may be the easiest upgrade to slot into everyday life. They feature Active Noise Cancellation in an open-ear design, improved sound and Live Translation, which could come in handy when travelling or having conversations across different languages.
So, Is Foldable Finally the Future of the iPhone?
Apple may be late to the foldable-phone party, but the iPhone Duo could be the model that makes foldable phones feel more mainstream.
The appeal isn’t simply being able to fold your phone in half. It’s about having a phone when you want something compact, and a bigger screen when you need more space — without carrying two devices.
For Apple fans who have been waiting for something genuinely different, the iPhone Duo might just be the most interesting iPhone upgrade in years.
