Singaporeans like to chase trends, like baked cheese tarts and the recent Pokemon Go craze. Do you chase any trends?

What on earth are baked cheese tarts? Oh, you mean those small little things? [Laughs] I am quite anti-trend – the word “trend” alone is rather off-putting. I like having both quality and character [in a product] and those take time to build. “Trend” suggests something that’s fluffy.

But I’m sure there were times when I’ve fallen for a trend simply because I really loved it. But I don’t like [any] trend now!

What would you say is the most ‘Singaporean’ thing about you?

It has to be the whole ‘rojak’ thing – whether it’s the language we speak or the way we see the world and think. We’re so comfortable with people of different races and beliefs. It’s very hard to put into words.

I didn’t realise that until I mixed with friends from homogeneous backgrounds – like Hong Kong, Taiwan and China – and they’re surprised when they see us interacting with people of other races very comfortably… It’s such a special trait.
