1. Ned Stark’s beheading (Season 1, Episode 9)

The death that taught us to expect the unexpected when it comes to Game of Thrones. It was shocking to witness the brutal beheading of Ned Stark, the patriarch of House Stark who seemed like the show’s main protagonist throughout the nine episodes he was in. The great Lord of Winterfell, played by the show’s top-billed actor Sean Bean, whose face is plastered on the promo posters… dead in the very first season? It hammered home the message for the rest of the series – that nobody, not even our favourite characters, is safe from death, and possibly a horribly brutal one too.
