The Broadway sensation WICKED has finally landed at Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands for an exclusive limited season, from 19 March to 27 April 2025.
Before seeing the musical, we had a vague idea that WICKED told the story that led up to the iconic Wizard of Oz, the story in which the notorious “Wicked Witch of the West” is the main antagonist. But in this captivating musical based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, that very character is the protagonist. As first-time WICKED viewers, we went in expecting to be enchanted and were completely spellbound.
A Magical Tale Reimagined
WICKED explores the untold story of Oz, long before Dorothy’s arrival, focusing on the unlikely friendship between two young women who began as “frenemies.” One, with emerald-green skin, is brilliant, fiery, misunderstood, and possesses extraordinary abilities. The other is cheerful, blonde, ambitious, and incredibly popular. While the characters may seem to fit familiar stereotypes, they are rich and multi-dimensional, making them relatable despite their fantastical world. The exceptional cast brings these characters to life, led by Courtney Monsma as Glinda, Zoe Coppinger as Elphaba, Jennifer Vuletic as Madame Morrible, Simon Burke as the Wizard, Liam Head as Fiyero, Paul Hanlon as Dr. Dillamond, Chelsea Dean as Nessarose, and Kurtis Papadinis as Boq.
The powerful vocals, breathtaking set design, and mesmerizing choreography were an incredible sensory experience that far surpassed our expectations. Beyond these unforgettable moments, the themes explored in the musical lingered with us long after the curtain fell. In addition to the core themes of love, friendship, identity, and acceptance, WICKED offered a thought-provoking twist on the timeless battle of good versus evil, revealing that perspectives could shape evil.
Overall, this musical is relatively child-friendly and easy to comprehend. The lyrics and themes are not too deep for younger audiences while still resonating with more mature ones. What we found especially moving was the two lead actresses’ superb chemistry and how much they complemented each other.
