7. Black Lightning
What it’s about: Based on the DC comic series, the show begins with Jefferson Pierce working hard as a high school principal and father, putting his days as superhero vigilante Black Lightning behind him for years now. But when his two daughters, Anissa and Jennifer, get caught up in the business of a local gang, Pierce has to make the tough choice to don his suit again. With the police as well as an old arch-enemy against him, Black Lightning is returning to a world of crime that’s gotten more dangerous than he’s ever known.
Why you should watch: Netflix may be more well-known for its Marvel shows, but this DC adaptation is a force of its own, from the creator who brought us other popular DC shows like Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl. More than your typical superhero series, the series tackles real-life modern issues from police brutality to family separation, all well-handled by the whip-smart writing and talented cast.
Season One is currently available on Netflix, and the show will return for Season Two in October.
