What it’s about: Fourteen-year-old best friends Monse, Cesar, Ruby, and Jamal, are starting their first year of high school in a predominantly Black and Latinx neighbourhood in Los Angeles, where hearing gunshots on your way to school is normal. As they navigate gang life, romance and even an old robbery plot, their friendship gets tested.

Why you should watch: It’s always refreshing to see a show with a diverse cast tackle racial and immigration politics without resorting to harmful and tired stereotypes.
