6. Star Trek: Discovery
What it’s about: Set about 10 years before the famous adventures of Kirk and Spock, Star Trek: Discovery can be considered a prequel to the original Star Trek series, taking place in the “prime” timeline that’s different from that of the J.J. Abrams films. In Discovery, we meet First Officer Michael Burnham, a human who was raised by Spock’s parents. While serving on the USS Shenzhou, Michael gets tangled up in an accident with the Klingons that sparks an all-out war between the Klingons and the Federation.
Why you should watch: How did a Star Trek series become “underrated”? Well, we definitely think it should be rescued from under the radar in Singapore, because it’s boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before. Unlike the episodic storytelling of most Star Trek series before, Discovery is serialised with a stronger trajectory running throughout, so get ready for more twists and cliffhangers. Diversity shines this time, too. We’re talking a lot of firsts in franchise history – the first black female lead, the first Asian female captain (Michelle Yeoh!), the first openly gay couple, and much more. You can expect more weird and thrilling science too, stemming from none other than mushroom spores.
Season One is currently available on Netflix, and the show will return for Season Two in January 2019.
