8. Geylang Serai lights up for Hari Raya

From now till 16 June 2019, Geylang Serai will be awash with colour and lights in conjunction with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as well as the lead up to Hari Raya Puasa.

Continuing the theme of “Celebrating the kampung spirit”, the brilliant display of nearly 50 light installations – stretching 1.8km along Changi Road, Geylang Road and Sims Avenue – bears icons closely related to the Malay culture, such as a mosque featuring golden domes surrounded by full blooms, a kampung house and a gendang, a traditional Malay drum.

As part of the Hari Raya Light Up, the Cultural Heritage Race will return on 18 May 2019.

Teams of three – that include a non-Malay Singapore-born citizen and a new Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident or Employment Pass holder – will race within the boundaries of Bazaar Raya Geylang Serai and Geylang Serai Heritage Trail to discover nuggets of information about Singapore’s Malay heritage.

Prizes include vouchers worth $1,400 (1st Prize), $700 (2nd Prize) and $450 (3rd Prize). There will also be three consolation prizes with $150 worth of vouchers each.

To register, please email Deanise Kwong (Deanise_Kwong@pa.gov.sg) or visit Geylang Serai Community Club at Level 1 of Wisma Geylang Serai (1 Engku Aman Road).
