6. Marvel at how couture and culture come together in Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture
Haute couture, and imperial history and art may not seem like things that go together – but blockbuster exhibition Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture, starting off Asian Civilisations Museum’s Season of Chinese Art, may just change your mind. Who is Guo Pei, you may ask? You’ve probably seen Rihanna’s gorgeous, red carpet-stealing golden gown at the 2015 Met Gala – Guo was the designer of that masterpiece, which took 50,000 hours to make! A renowned Chinese couturière who has clothed the likes of Zhang Ziyi, Angelababy and Li Bingbing, Guo’s elaborately crafted works are now being exhibited here, and you can get a chance to see them up close!
The exhibition presents a dialogue between historical and contemporary Chinese design, by juxtaposing 29 embroidered masterworks by Guo Pei with 20 Chinese art masterpieces in the Asian Civilisations Museum’s collection. It aims to examine the relevance and impact of Chinese art, and how Chinese aesthetics and traditions are being reimagined for the world today.
Be awestruck by the intricacy and creativity of Guo’s craftsmanship, through pieces like ‘青花瓷 (Blue-and-White Porcelain)’ and ‘来自「龙的故事」系列 (Legend of the Dragon Collection)’, which meld Western creative techniques with traditional Chinese patterns such as brush painting.
Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture will be open from 15 June to 15 September 2019 at the Asian Civilisations Museum. Admission charges apply.
