You may not recognise the man, but you’ll almost certainly recognise his work. Adam Hughes has been bringing form and colour to many favourite comic characters for more than 25 years. Some of his most famous works include Captain America, Catwoman and Wonder Woman.

Hughes is known for portraying the comic world’s super ladies in classic pin-up style, for which he has bagged Best Cover Artist titles at the Eisner, Harvey and Inkpot awards.

Before his star appearance at STGCC, Hughes tells Weekender the details behind his muse, his favourite girls and his plans for fans at the convention.

When and how did you get started on your signature pin-up style?

I’m not sure when I started.  I feel like my style is constantly evolving, and it’s tough to pin a start date on it.  I was inspired by my love of beautiful women multiplied by my discovery of Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer.

How has the comics industry changed since you first started out?

[For] the American comics industry, while there have always been great artists in every era, I feel that there are more great artists per capita now than ever before.  Which sucks, because I’d like more bad artists around so that I look more awesome by comparison.

What helps you to decide which characters to take on?

I take on an assignment based on whether or not I can bring something to the character.  Sometimes I’ll take on a character just because I’ve always wanted to draw that character, like Captain America.

Sometimes I take on a project because of the money (we all have bills to pay), and sometimes because it’s just for the challenge.  I had no burning desire to draw Dr Manhattan, but I wanted to do some interiors.

Which character are you the most attracted to?

Whichever one I am currently working on, because I believe in fidelity. Also: the ones with the nicest breasts.

Which of your characters do you wish could have his/her own blockbuster movie?

Catwoman! How cool would it be if Catwoman had her own movie? Because she’s never had one!

What would you like to be if you weren’t a comic book artist?

An astronaut.  Or an astronomer!  Something involving space.  I’m very claustrophobic.

Do you see your art style changing going forward?

It’s always evolving.  I have no idea where it’s going because I never anticipated where I am now.  I go where the art takes me.

What upcoming projects can fans look out for?

Let’s see. Barb Wire covers for Dark Horse, a Call of Duty poster for Activision, variant covers for Marvel, getting ready to start writing and drawing Betty & Veronica for Archie Comics, and posing and reposing my Hot Toys Avengers: Age of Ultron Captain America 12” figure. And some stuff I can’t discuss until the contracts are signed.

What can fans look forward to from Adam Hughes at STGCC 2015?

I’m very excited to visit Singapore and when I get excited I sweat a lot. I promise to bathe daily!
