Fiji is the stuff that inspires movies. In fact, the legendary Blue Lagoon (1980) that propelled Brooke Shields to fame was shot at Turtle Island in Fiji. The iridescence of the Fijian waters, the powdery texture of the sand and the lush, idyllic beauty of the tropical forests on land set the standard for all castaway-type of movies. To divers and lovers of marine life, there are even more reasons to visit Fiji. The waters surrounding the islands of Fiji are teeming with fish species and a wide diversity of corals, both soft and hard. It’s a heaven for underwater photography enthusiasts.

3. Swim with sharks

If you prefer adrenaline-pumping activities, head down to Barefoot Kuata. Situated in the lower Yasawa Islands, Barefoot Kuata Island runs a shark dive. Known as the Awakening Shark Dive, it took a marine biologist and shark specialist more than a year to develop it. Many tests and trial runs had to be first conducted to make sure divers’ safety is not in any way at risk. Besides having a strong conservation focus, it also promotes better understanding of sharks. Conducted with a high staff to guest ratio to ensure safety, Barefoot Kuata’s shark dives are a thrilling experience.  I saw about 13 bull sharks on my dive. Though this dive is only for certified divers, the resort also runs shark snorkeling trips for non-divers. You will get to see plenty of whitetip and blacktip sharks during these snorkel trips.
