Fiji is the stuff that inspires movies. In fact, the legendary Blue Lagoon (1980) that propelled Brooke Shields to fame was shot at Turtle Island in Fiji. The iridescence of the Fijian waters, the powdery texture of the sand and the lush, idyllic beauty of the tropical forests on land set the standard for all castaway-type of movies. To divers and lovers of marine life, there are even more reasons to visit Fiji. The waters surrounding the islands of Fiji are teeming with fish species and a wide diversity of corals, both soft and hard. It’s a heaven for underwater photography enthusiasts.

4. Relax in Bula Time

“Bula” actually means “hello” in Fiji. The local take a step further with it to also excuse themselves for being late or as it a lighthearted explanation for why things are always delayed  (in Fiji) or not happening as they should. They call this “bula time” which refers to their own relaxed concept of time. While in Fiji, do not expect anything to happen as scheduled; just relax and take things as they come, and you may find yourself truly enjoying your holiday. At both Barefoot resorts, there are plenty of leisurely activities– like visit a local village to see how Fijians live, learn how to make jewellery out of coconut husks or go for a sunrise walk. Though the last doesn’t sound like a “bula” activity as you are required to assembled at half five in the morning for a 30-min walk up a hill, the sight of the sun slowly emerging from the horizon is worth the effort.
