The phone of the future will launch in the middle of 2019
Amid tensions with the United States over security allegations, Huawei pushes on with their plan to shake up the smartphone game and just last Sunday announced what they claim to be “the world’s fastest foldable 5G phone.”
It’s the Huawei Mate X, truly the most revolutionary phone that the Chinese tech firm has released to date, and that’s saying a lot. It’s certainly not the first foldable phone in the market – in fact, 2019 has quickly turned into the year of the foldable phone, with a bunch of top smartphone companies introducing their own version of the incredible technology and fighting to one-up the other. Most recently, Samsung impressed us with the Galaxy Fold. According to most tech critics who had the chance to review both the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X, the Huawei offering reigns superior.
What makes the Mate X so amazing, and how does that folding screen work? We highlight some of the coolest features (in pictures), and tell you what you really need to know (brace yourself for the cost) about the phone, to be released in mid-2019.
1. There are three differently-sized screens
With that foldable technology, the Huawei Mate X is smartphone and tablet in one. If you think that means it has two screen displays, you’d be please to know it has three!
You can use it like your usual smartphone on the big 6.6-inch all-touchscreen front display, or flip it over to the 6.38-inch rear display. The difference between the two flip sides is that the rear has a slender little black vertical sidebar on the left, where the cameras and other components lie. Also, the rear isn’t all-screen, which accounts for the slightly smaller display length. There’s a small black panel saying “selfie” (more on that at #4) that’s not part of the display. This smaller secondary display is great for saving battery when you need to!
Now for the magic: unfold the phone from the side where the little grip bar is, and you open up a huge 8-inch tablet all-screen display. Perfect for watching Netflix or play games! The sidebar also functions as a handy grip when you’re using the tablet, and the falcon wing shape is so pretty. In contrast to the Samsung Galaxy Fold that folds inwards like a book, the Mate X folds outwards, so you can visibly see that transformation from smartphone to tablet in one single screen. And based on what we’ve seen, like the above gif, it’s an incredibly snappy transformation within seconds, both ways!
