Do your part to prevent food waste today
Re-use leftovers in creative ways for your next meal
Hashtag your photos on Instagram and feed a family in need while you’re at it.
That activity is part of electrical appliance company Electrolux’s new six-week movement to prevent food waste, #happyplatesg, starting today on World Food Day (Oct 16).
To take part, all you have to do is upload a photograph of an empty plate after you’ve polished off your meal with the hashtag #happyplatesg.
For every three hashtags, Electrolux will donate a food bundle consisting of items such as rice, oil and sardines, to disadvantaged families with the help of the Food Bank, a charity that distributes food to the needy. Up to 1,000 families are expected to benefit from this exercise.
Those who are keen to take the fight against food waste offline can even sign up as a volunteer to pack the food bundles.
The biggest wasters
Electrolux’s campaign was launched to raise awareness of Singaporeans’ food wastage habits.
Conducted earlier this year, the Electrolux Food Waste At Home Survey revealed that an alarming 788,600 tonnes of food was wasted in 2014, equivalent to about 39,420 double-decker buses.
The biggest wasters, the survey revealed, were those aged between 18 and 24. And cooked rice, vegetables and cooked meat emerged as the overall top three most wasted food in homes.
Win a spot at Chef E’s Cooking Workshops
Besides doing your bit for charity, participating in the campaign will also give you a chance to win a spot at Chef E (Eric Low)’s exclusive cooking workshops held at The Providore Cooking Studio, Pasarbella.
Chef Eric’s cooking demonstration during a cooking workshop
Having attended the workshop recently, I must say it was a fruitful and insightful experience.
Chef Eric, a veteran in the cooking industry, showed participants how leftovers can be used to make delicious meals.
I tried cooking the Fish Piccata (below), where white fish fillets were pan-fried and topped with a tomato-based sauce made from leftover carrots, garlic and celery.

And let your creativity go wild with the all-purpose sauce — it can go with just about anything, from pasta to shrimp dishes.
Those curious to see Chef Eric at work can head to Tangs Orchard’s basement from now to Nov 22 on Sundays for his ‘live’ cooking demonstrations.
You can also learn first-hand, how to reduce food waste at home as well as pick up practical, fun and useful tips to help the average household make a difference.
