7. The First Purge

“The Purge” franchise has been redefining the genre of political horror since the first film came out in 2013. They explore a frightening concept of what could happen when all crimes, including murder, are made legal in the United States for a 12-hour period once a year. As the fourth instalment and prequel, “The First Purge” dives deep into the origins of the first-ever “purge” with a focus on racial violence. We find out that the New Founding Fathers of America introduced the idea as an experiment to allow the citizens of Staten Island to vent all their pent-up aggression for one night, in the hopes that the purge would bring down the crime rate for the rest of the year. All the horrors you can imagine happens in that one night, and random violence slowly gives way to white supremacist groups like Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan. Our main cast of characters, led by Y’lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis and Joivan Wade, fight not just for their own lives, but also to save one another and their community from destruction. Besides recalling the US’s racial past, the timely film also speaks directly in response to the hateful atmosphere of the Trump era.
