7 Performing Arts Interest Groups To Join If You Love Singing, Dancing Or Acting

Further your passion for performing while making some great friends

Think becoming a professional singer, dancer or actor is a pipe dream in Singapore? Then you might not have heard that NUSChoir took home the top prize at the prestigious Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod and was named “Choir of the World.” Or that many of our local theatre companies have been staging their original productions for audiences overseas.

For those of us no longer in school, we don’t have CCAs that will give us a chance to perform or compete even as we learn. But all is not lost! Many community interest groups and professional companies around Singapore invite members of the public who love to sing, dance or act to join them, even with little or no experience. More than your typical classes or workshops, these seven groups will take you out of the studio and onto the big stage, so you can experience the rush of performing before an audience.

Join adults from all over the world at one of Singapore’s oldest chorus groups! Established in 1974 as the adult choral body of the United World College of South East Asia, the International Festival Chorus Singapore (IFC) opens its doors to all who are passionate about music. No choir experience? No problem! Not only are auditions not needed to join, you can also drop by for a trial rehearsal to test out your interest. But we dare say you’d want to stay, drawn by the lively sense of camaraderie and the exciting performance opportunities. Besides getting invited to perform at unique events like a Lord of the Rings concert, IFC keeps themselves busy by regularly collaborating with local orchestras and other choirs, while also hosting their own two formal concerts every year, where they sing a diverse range of genres from classical pieces to folksongs and music from beloved films. Want to get a better idea of their sound? Catch the chorus singing for Esplanade’s Red Dot August programme of free performances, at the Esplanade Concourse on 7 August, 7pm and 7:45pm.

Rehearsals are every Tuesday evening during the season from 7.30pm to 10pm, at the UWC Dover Campus, 1207 Dover Road, Singapore 139654.

For their upcoming winter concert on 8 December, IFC invites you to join them when the first rehearsal starts on 14 August! You can find more information and register at their official website, or drop them a message on their Facebook page.
