After visiting the traditional spots and eating your fill, here’s something unexpected to “balance” out your trip. The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, may look slightly clinical from the outside at first glance, but it hides a world of immersive experiences within, like ‘The Swimming Pool’, an interactive, creepy-cool installation by Leandro Erlich.

A mix of new and old, Kanazawa may be steeped in Japan’s ancient past, but it has all the modern trappings that a traveller could want, making it the perfect place to explore if you’re venturing for the first time out of Tokyo.
