I absolutely adore the city of Tokyo, but when the lights of Shibuya get too overwhelming, there’s always the option of hopping onto the shinkansen (Japanese bullet train) and be magically transported to a whole new world in a matter of hours.
For a good mix of new and old, head to the city of Kanazawa, the capital of the Ishikawa prefecture. Accessible by the Hokuriku shinkansen, it’s about two and a half hours away from Tokyo.
