Dia De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead)
Where: Mexico City, Mexico
When: 31 October – 2 November 2017
The Day of the Dead festival originated from ancient traditions from pre- Columbian cultures. Rituals celebrating the deaths of ancestors had been observed by these civilizations perhaps for as long as 2500 to 3000 years. Death is honored greatly in this culture and the festival focuses on the gathering of family and friends praying for their deceased loved ones – to make their transition to the afterlife easier. In the modern day, believers celebrate by dressing up as the dead and parade down their individual communities. The interest in the parade became vast exponentially that it was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The distinct components of this celebration attract numerous travelers worldwide, some joining in the parades by dressing up and carrying out the unique rituals. The Day of the Dead festival is free for all, hence it is predicted to be very popular and crowded in the years to come.
