The twin stars in the western Indian Ocean, Mauritius and Reunion Island are largely known as dreamy beach destinations for sun lovers and thrill seekers.

However, as we discovered, there are many more exciting experiences to be had at this paradise.

Mauritius was once a French (1715-1810) and then a British (1810-1968) colony, and while the government uses English as its official language, you’ll hear mostly French being chattered and hollered in the streets.

Led by a helpful and friendly guide from Kreola Ltd, we uncovered these gems on our journey.

6. Helicopter on Reunion Island

Before even landing in Reunion Island, we were taken and impressed by the beautiful landscape of this atoll, located 175km off Mauritius. Reunion Island is an overseas department of France, and here, you’ll find a more polished side of the former French colony.

Restaurants, cafes and handicraft markets are what line the streets here; but rather than sticking to land, we took to the skies to admire the surroundings.

The Corail Helicopter ride swept us over stunning views like Salazie and Mafate (volcanic caldera and commune), Trou de Fer (a waterfall) and the lagoon.
