5. Japan: Queue for KFC

Like how turkey, log cakes and fruit cakes are a must on Christmas, for the Japanese, Christmas equals KFC. It all started with a marketing campaign in 1974, and since then KFC has been associated with the Yuletide season and passed down for generations.

Daily sales at some restaurants during the Christmas period can be 10 times their usual take, reported BBC. There’s even a KFC special Christmas dinner that opens for pre-orders weeks in advance. Queues can run up to hours.
