3. Catalonia, Spain: Spot the pooping man

El Caganer is a figurine of a defecating man that is hidden in nativity scenes in Catalonia. Its origins are unknown, but it is believed to have entered the nativity scene by early-18th century. Traditionally, the Caganer is depicted as a peasant wearing a traditional Catalan red cap, baring his backside and defecating. But he’s far from a party pooper – if children can find it, they win a prize.

Catalonia also has the Tió de Nadal, or the pooping log. The log is decorated with a face and blanket, and on Christmas Eve, it is placed halfway into a fire and beaten with sticks.
