1. Caracas, Venezuela: Roller-skating to church

During the Christmas period, churches in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas hold mass services. That’s no surprise. What’s unique is how everyone gets to church: Roller skates.

These masses, called Misas de Aguinaldo, are held every day from 16-24 Dec, and it is customary to skate to them. Entire streets are closed off to cars until 8am to make way for skaters. Some children go one step further to wake up on time for this by tying a long string to their big toe and hanging it out of the window. The next morning, passers-by will tug on any string they see hanging out to wake them up.
