A beautiful city rich in culture and heritage

3. Basilica Cistern
Built in AD532, this underwater reservoir was constructed with 336 columns, salvaged from Roman ruins. During the Byzantine Empire, it was used to store up to 80,000 cubic metres of water. It laid forgotten for many years until it was rediscovered by a French scholar in the 14th century. Today, many visitors explore the underground chambers to see the carvings its columns that remain in pristine condition. One of particular interest to tourists are the two Medusa heads found in the northwestern corner of the cistern. Visitors like to throw coins into the water around the heads, believing that their wishes will manifest.
