3. Shirakawa-Go
Located in Ono District, Gifu Prefecture, the village of Shirakawa-Go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its uniquely built houses in a gassho-zukuri style. A gassho-style roof is usually high and covered in shingles or tiles. During winter, as snow blankets the entire area, Shirakawa-Go looks like a fairytale village come to life.
