2. Matsumoto Castle

Known as “Crow Castle” thanks to its unusual black exterior, Matsumoto Castle in Nagano Prefecture, is truly a warrior’s keep. Unlike many other castles, no one has ever actually lived in this stronghold. Instead, the family of the ruling feudal lord and his loyal samurai would stay outside and around the structure.

In the truest sense, Matsumoto Castle, with its masonry walls and sliding windows for archers, is a defensive fort that has never been successfully invaded.

Matsumoto Castle, Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
