Skincare tips from top beauty vloggers

These popular YouTubers tell us their favourite skincare and makeup products of the moment

When it comes to skincare, keeping it simple is best, say international beauty YouTubers Weylie Hoang and Karissa Pukas, who were in town recently for homegrown label Skin Inc’s eighth anniversary celebrations.

Often, cleansing, toning and mois-turising are enough, they say.

They share more of their beauty philosophies with us.

San Francisco resident, Weylie hoang, 22, has more than 1.4 million subscribers on her Youtube channel, “ilikeweylie” and vlogs about numerous topics, like makeup tutorials and relationship advice.

What is one skincare product you can’t live without?

Serum, because it treats as well as moisturises the skin. I like using my customised Skin Inc serum, made of hyaluronic acid and Vitamin A and C.

The liquid is lightweight and helps make my skin look plump.

If you could give anyone in the world a makeover, who would it be and why?

American actress Brenda Song. She is gorgeous, and I’ve been her fan since her Disney Channel days. She seems very down to earth and I would love to do her makeup so that I can get to know her better.

I keep it simple with a three-step routine — cleanse, moisturise, followed by some sort of targeted treatment product.

If I’m not breaking out, I would use a lotion with brightening properties. If I had a pimple outbreak, then I would use an acne treatment product.

Always take off your makeup at the end of the day. I once went through a week without removing my makeup. My skin broke out immediately.

What’s one thing people don’t know about being a Beauty vlogger?

It is not as glamorous as it seems. Many people look at us and think that we lead an amazing life and are always happy.

But we’re just like everyone else. We have our troubles.

Currently residing in Australia, Canadian native Karissa Pukas, 24, of ‘saturdaynightsalrite’ has more than 600,000 subscribers and dishes out makeup and skincare tips, alongside beauty product reviews and travelogues.

What is your favourite makeup product of the moment?

I love a good highlighter as it gives my skin a healthy glow. There are so many options in terms of shades and tones — you could use a white or gold one if you are fair, or a gold and bronzy one if you are tanned.

Get your brows waxed or threaded professionally as having the right brow shape will definitely enhance your appearance.

I use a facial cleanser in the shower; a milk-based one, usually. Once out of the shower,

I apply toner, serum and facial oil — Vitamin A, C and E oils — before following up with a moisturiser. At night, I keep to the same routine but I would use a makeup remover first.

Beauty review: masked to perfection

Scotts-Square-3

Imagine an oasis away from all the last minute festive shopping and work deadlines. Now that would be a treat, wouldn’t it?

Tucked away at level B1 of Scotts Square is Skin Inc’s Pop-Up Lifestyle Space. The cosy area offers the homegrown beauty brand’s full suite of customisable serums as well as facial treatments.

Customised Serums

I was there last week to try the new Mask-to-Perfection Treatment, a 45-minute facial that aims to deeply cleanse and hydrate skin. Once seated, I was handed an iPad to complete the Skin Identity test.

The comprehensive test, which had questions ranging from lifestyle routines to skincare habits, helped to identify the three serums (out of the nine available there) best suited for my skin. They were: Vitamin A which to help even out my skin tone and rid dark circles, Vitamin C to treat open pores and Licorice for antioxidant properties.

Jetting Away Imperfections

To start, the therapist double-cleansed my skin with the brand’s Skin Inc Trinity Oil followed by the Prodew Cleansing Foam. Her practised hands performed sweeping motions on my skin, gently massaging off all traces of makeup.

With my skin squeaky clean, the facial session began with the Oxy Miracle Peel treatment. This treatment simply involves a unique jet applicator, which shot pressured jets of oxygen and saline on my skin at “supersonic” speed.

The sensation was cold but painless, and I was happy to hear that these pressured jets would unclog my pores and remove surface pigments.

Following that, a customised ‘cocktail’ of my three chosen serums was massaged into my skin, leaving it feeling plump and moisturised.

Multi-masking

Finally, the Get Glowin’ Brightening Mask was applied to my T-zone (forehead and nose bridge) while the Pure Deepsea Hydrating Mask was slathered onto my U-zone (chin and cheeks).

The concept of multi-masking was new to me, but it turned out to be what my combination skin needed — my T-zone felt matte and oil-free for the rest of the day.

At the end of the treatment, I was thoroughly relaxed and my skin had a noticeable glow.

The Mask-to-Perfection facial is available at $168 at both Skin Inc’s Lifestyle Space at Scotts Square (pop-up store from now until end-March 2016) and Concept Store at Ion Orchard.
