Though the famous dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock, whom Phantom Thread revolves around, is not an actual person in real life, the character and his marvelous gowns were inspired by some of the most esteemed fashion designers, one of them being Cristóbal Balenciaga. Daniel Day-Lewis, ever the dedicated actor, learned to sew and recreated a whole Balenciaga dress by hand before he began filming, to get into the character of Woodcock and the world of couture. The patterns and fabrics of the gowns were carefully designed to be accurate to the movie’s 1950s London setting; that signature lavender dress pictured above was made with rare 17th century lace!
