5. Shirkers
Singapore-born filmmaker Sandi Tan wowed audiences and critics with her documentary Shirkers, which bagged the World Cinema Documentary Directing Award at the at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The curious and mysterious documentary puts together footage from a 35mm road movie that teenage Tan had shot with her best friend, Jasmine Ng. Before they could complete it, Tan’s middle-aged American film mentor and friend disappeared with all the cans of film. Two decades later, the film footage was unexpectedly returned to Tan, who was then living in Los Angeles. She decides to turn it into a meditative and nostalgic film that documents her own past, her relationships with the two friends, and Singapore in the 1990s.
Singapore Film Society is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a premiere of Shirkers on 20 October, at GV Capitol. Sandi Tan and other crew members of the movie will be present, so join the premiere for a chance to meet them. You can also stream the movie on Netflix when it premieres there on 26 October.
Release date: 20 October (GV); 26 October (Netflix)
