A Tim Burton film without Johnny Depp? It may take some getting used to, but this upcoming film by the famously quirky director presents a change of scenery that could prove refreshing.

The story follows typical American teen Jake (Asa Butterfield), an awkward boy who can’t connect with anyone except his grandfather. But when the old man suddenly passes, Jake sets off on a journey that leads him to the mysterious Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Deviations from the novel

Fans of the original best-selling novel by Ransom Riggs, published in 2011, will no doubt be excited about this adaptation by Burton, who describes feeling a connection to Riggs’ “dreamlike, powerful and mysterious” material.

However, expect the movie to deviate from Riggs’ novel in several ways. The author, who visited the film set, admits, “The book and the movie are not the same, and it took me a little while to make friends with that idea.”

In particular, Barron is one character who takes on a different personality. Jackson explains, “People who know Barron from the book may be surprised to see him in this film… He has these moments where you know Barron is enjoying himself – when he looks at the Peculiars and thinks they’re kind of fun.”

But that doesn’t mean that the changes take away from the spirit of the story. Riggs recalls, “[When] I watched scenes being filmed [I] said to myself, ‘I wish I had thought of that!’”
