A Strange story
World-famous neurosurgeon Dr Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch) survives a horrific car accident, but loses use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look in an unlikely place — the mysterious centre for healing, Kamar-Taj.
However, he quickly learns that this is also the frontline of a battle against dark forces threatening humanity. Now armed with magical powers, Strange is forced to choose between his old life of fame and fortune, and a new role in defending the world as the Sorcerer Supreme.
It’s not all action-heavy scenes that line the movie. In the spiritual centre of Kamar-Taj, Strange finds inner comfort and solace — a message that Cumberbatch, a Buddhist, found himself connecting with.
Comparing against the original Doctor Strange, he shares, “I thought it was important to add a lot more hubris to this character and to take him on a really rich journey.”
Perhaps that’s why the movie has been receiving praises for its stunning and almost psychedelic visuals amidst the highly charged action. Acclaim has also been levelled at its score, which is composed by Michael Giacchino (Jurassic World, The Incredibles and “Lost”).
