October was an exciting month for tennis fans in Singapore. With top names like Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, and Caroline Wozniacki arriving at our shores, there’s not a moment to waste in catching up with them!
The Sugarpova Candy Line
When it comes to happiness, Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova means serious business – and gummy treats are on the top of her list. She officially launched her colourful candy collection, Sugarpova, here on 15 Oct.
The line features nine playful flavours, including the heel- and sunglass-shaped “Chic” pack, and sour gummy stars and hearts in the “Flirty Sour” pack. Find out more about Sugarpova in our FOODMANIA section!
Tight matches for Sharapova
But not everything was sugar-sweet for Sharapova at WTA. The crowd favourite faced a flurry of fierce matches – starting off with Danish powerhouse Caroline Wozniacki on 21 Oct.
Sharapova kept her defences high in the first two sets, evening the scoreboard at 7-6, 6-7; however, Wozniacki felled the Russian champion in the final set with a score of 6-2.
On 23 Oct, Sharapova was again stretched by Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. Kvitova ultimately claimed victory at 6-3, 6-2.
Quick Recovery for Serena Williams
A four-time Olympic gold medallist with 63 WTA titles and 18 Grand Slam Singles crowns, Serena Williams experienced her worst defeat in 16 years right here on 22 Oct.
She was trumped by Romanian rising star Simona Halep in a 6-0, 6-2 set during the WTA. It was a bitter reflection of Williams’ defeat in 1998, when she was crushed by South African player Joannette Kruger in Oklahoma City.
She woefully told reporters: “My forehand was off today again. I guess it went on an early vacation.”
But Williams was quick to get back on her feet. In the final match on 26 Oct, she avenged her loss by smashing Halep 6-3, 6-0, claiming the WTA Championship 2014 crown.
