Oscars 2019: Our Favourite Moments From The Awards Show

Historic wins, Gaga slaying "Shallow" again, Chris Evans being a gentleman, and more

You're not alone if you thought the 2019 Academy Awards was going to be a hot mess after learning that there wouldn't be a host. A few bizarre things did happen during the film awards show, but the decision to break from tradition turned out to be more refreshing than awkward. On a night when Green Book winning the highly-coveted Best Picture award was met with an underwhelming response, there were also lots of milestones for diversity, inspiring speeches and hilarious parodies that made this year's Oscars still one to celebrate.

2. Black Panther winners led the historic night for black women

Though Black Panther didn’t win Best Picture, the awards it did receive will go down in the history books. The Marvel film was awarded best Costume Design and best Production Design, with Ruth Carter and Hannah Beachler respectively becoming the first African-Americans to ever win in their categories. Black Panther ultimately earned Marvel Studios its first-ever Oscar wins, and it wasn’t just one, but three! The film also picked up the award for Original Score.

Beachler -who’s also worked as production designer for Fruitvale Station, Creed, Moonlight, and Beyonce’s Lemonade – gave an emotional speech upon receiving her award. “I give the strength to all of those who come next to keep going,” she said. “To never give up. And when you think it’s impossible, just remember to say this piece of advice I got from a very wise woman: I did my best and my best is good enough.”

Ready for another first? The 2019 Academy Awards was the first year in the show’s history that more than one black women won an award on the same night! We couldn’t believe this was even a milestone to cross in 2019! And again, there were three: Carter and Beachler joined Regina King, who won Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk, in the historic celebration of black girl magic.
